Remember to take some time for yourself
It was World Mental Health day last week and so I think it's a good time as any to take a moment to remind everyone to look after themselves. It's hard, I admit, in this day and age where the world is moving way too fast and we are all so focused on the hustle, free time seems to be a rare occurrence.
But here's the thing, you're only human.
One in four people in the world will have a mental health issue at some point in their lives. Around 450 million people currently suffer from mental health conditions, placing mental disorders among the leading causes of ill-health and disability worldwide. So if you don't suffer from a mental health condition, I can guarantee you that you know someone that does.
Mental health issues are real. They exist. And you aren't alone.
I get it, talking about mental health is not the easiest thing in the world, there is so much stigma attached to it, especially in certain communities. It's such a hard thing to live with, and so many people out there refuse to accept that they have these issues. Because it seems weak, silly, an overreaction - but it's not. We need to start the conversation because not talking about it is not helping anyone.
Mental health is not something to be ashamed of, it is a part of some us, just like anything else. Acknowledging this and learning to deal with some of the effects that come with it is the only way to move forward. We need to better educate ourselves as a society on mental health, only once we understand what is going on can we really deal with it and help our loved ones deal with it.
We all have moments where everything just feels a little overwhelming, we all have breaking points. It's what makes us this wonderfully chaotic mess of creatures that we are. Ultimately it's what makes us stronger and wiser.
But none of us can do this alone. So reach out - talk to a friend, a professional, a family member.
